It is no longer a toll charge to call to and from Lubbock, or Abilene or Amarillo from communities using the provisions of Texas senate bill 632. Almost complete support for this legislation from each rural community in Texas has brought to the forefront one of the main ideas of SafeTI.net: The Challenge.
The SafeTI.net came into being from the idea that since each of the rural communities so overwhelmingly supported a group shift into toll free local calling, why not offer free internet access for the entire non-profit sector in the rural areas (and call it taxpayer savings and/or economic development) as a next step. By consolidating the purchasing power of this rural consumer base, free non-profit communications services can be delivered from the enrollment of large numbers of the regular commercial and individual communications services for internet and discount long distance.
