MANY SYSTEMS fall under the category of educational networks, though they each contain a wide breadth of user offerings. They present the user with the ability to collect and disseminate educational information, as well as interconnect to other network providers.

Big Sky Telegraph. This rural network began as a distance education testbed. Now it offers a variety of services, including teaching local communities how to use the Internet. Connects educators by way of the telnet function to the Internet, as well as to research information and professional development resources. Membership is required ($50). Users: About 1000 per month. Uses: distance education, email, information services. Contact: Frank Odasz, franko@bigsky.dillon.mt.us, (406)-683-7338.

The Bolt, Beranek and Newman National School Network Testbed. Funded by NSF, the BBN Testbed is a prototype full-service educational network. Membership is limited to experimental schools in New England and California, but they offer access to useful research information through the BBN gopher site. Uses: collaborative learning, multi-user simulations, research and professional development (specifically math teaching, alternative assessment, apprentice teacher training), as well as connection points to numerous network providers, including the California Department of Education and FrEdMail (see below). Contact: Denis Newman, dnewman@bbn.com, (619) 942-3734.

FidoNet. A network of mostly public-access BBS's. Membership: Yes, sometimes with donation. Uses: Store and Forward email/conferencing between 16,000 BBS's. Contact: Janet Murray, jmurray@psg.com.

FrEdMail. The oldest and largest educational network in America. Membership is free. Uses: Information exchange between teachers and students around the world. Contains experiments, research projects, email, lesson plan exchange and peer assistance. Contact: Al Rogers, arogers@bonita.cerf.fred.org.

Educational Gateways

A GATEWAY is simply a connection point to the Internet. Educational gateways offer low-cost network connectivity for students and educators alike. In a sense, almost any network node can be considered a gateway due to the transparent nature of network protocols.

The Knowledge Network Gateway (KNG). Pacific Bell/CSU's K-14 classroom gateway to the Internet, offering a full suite of Internet capabilities. Memberships are not required, though there is a charge for Internet address. Uses: Information service/gateway. A travel bureau for students for research on the net. Contact: TBD.

Commercial Collaborative Learning Services

CERTAIN SYSTEMS specialize in on-line collaborative learning. Students and teachers utilize these services to stay in contact with other students and teachers subscribing to the same system. The groups of learners are situated around a common goal (designed by either the service provider or the educators involved), such as surveying acid rain samples or raising fruitflies. The network is then used as the medium of information exchange and review.

AT&T Learning Network. A K-12 curriculum-based multimedia program. Matches 8 to 10 classes of students and teachers from around the world in "Learning Circles." Membership is required. Subscriptions vary, price TBD. Uses: project research and development exchange, discussion forums. Contact: Joan Fenwick, 1-800-367-7225.

The Jason Project. Famed explorer Robert Ballard leads this interactive fieldtrip program, where students spend two weeks on-line exploring and researching a real ÒadventureÓ with project scientists. The next trip, Jason VI: Planet Earth, begins in February of 1995, when explorers and students tackle the volcanoes of the Hawaiian Islands. Curriculum material can be ordered from Mind Extension University at 1-800-777-MIND. Prices will be announced in November, 1994.

National Geographic Kids Network. A science and geography curriculum for 4th-6th graders. Students around the world conduct specifically assigned research, then exchange and compare their results electronically. Run by NGS/Technical Education Research Centers. Membership is required, $115 for tuition and telecommunications materials, $325-$375 for each project kit. Uses: Moderated student research exchange, collaberation. Contact: NGS Educational Services, 1-800-368-2728.

Online Discussion Groups and Electronic Journals

(latest revision: June 18, 1996)

THE INTERNET contains literally thousands of special interest discussion groups, each individually controlled by a program known as a listserver (commonly referred to as a listserv or a list). Discussions are often moderated by a list owner, but this is not always the case. Most lists can be provided to the user either in a digest form or on a post-by-post basis. Any member of the list may take part in a conversation or begin a new topic. Listservs also distribute electronic journals (commonly known as e-journals or e-texts), moderated on-line magazines usually dedicated to a specific area of research. Lists and e-journals are joined by posting email to the list address and writing the following in the first line of the actual posting:

subscribe [name of list] [your first name] [your last name]

Nothing else may be written within the message page. For example, if dbowie@stardust.com wanted to join the Education Technology list (EDTECH), he would send mail to listserv@msu.edu and write the following within the the post:

subscribe EDTECH David Bowie

The listserv program does the rest.

Presented here is a collection of education-centered discussion groups. This is by no means a comprehensive list, for two reasons. First, lists come and go, so it is virtually impossible to keep a truly up-to-date list collection, as hard as one may try. Second, because the term 'education' covers a wide variety of list types (K-12, special ed, higher ed, graduate research, etc.), a list of education lists takes on a mind of its own when one attempts to assemble every listserv associated with education. Therefore, the focus of this list will be general education, K-12 education, education technology and education reform.

If you are accessing EdWeb by way of Netscape or a similarly advanced Web browser, you can click onto the name of the list group and automatically connect to an email program. Once you are connected, all you have to do is type in the "subscribe" line as usual. If you'd like to check out Netscape, the Netscape Home Page will connect you to a variety of sites that will download it to your computer.

Gophers and World-Wide Web Servers

BY FAR the most popular simplest methods of accessing information over the Internet are the protocols known as Gopher and the World-Wide Web (often called the Web, WWW or W3). Gopher, invented at the University of Minnesota (The Golden Gophers, get it?), is a hierarchically-based text menu system which allows the user to navigate a given site's information bank, as well as to connect to other information sites. Once connected to a gopher server, the user may surf around from site to site with ease, gathering information by searching menus of interest or typing in key words of interest, which the gopher program then searches for within the system.

The Web, one of the most recent additions to the Internet, is an advanced navigator protocol which offers easy access to graphics and text, as well as audio and video samples. Using a browsing program such as Netscape, a user connects with a Web home page, which is simply a default server connection From a home page, the user may click on to highlighted text or graphics to log on to other infomation systems. (note: another browser, Lynx, is also very useful, for it is text-based only. This means it is faster than Netscape Mosaic, and more importantly, can work fairly well over a modem connection.)

Both gopher and the Web are excellent research tools, for they allow the user to travel the net, following subjects of interest and guiding the computer with key words or phrases typed into the system. Though lacking the audiovisual capabilities of the Web, gopher provides quick connectivity to thousands of text sources. The Web, on the other hand, includes the ability to see and hear samples interesting bits of information.

When it comes to logging into a gopher or Web client, one must always remember the basic rule: you can access a gopher using Web software, but you usually can't access the Web with gopher software. Because gopher is text-based, a Web program such as Mosaic can handle a gopher connection without trouble. When a gopher program attempts to log onto a Web client, though, the attempt will either fail or only connect to the textual information (and thus ignore any graphics or sound capabilities).

Sometimes a client will have the same address name for its gopher and Web, so it will access its information in accordance to the user's software. More often than not, if you know the name of a gopher server (such as gopher.ed.gov), you can usually substitute the word 'gopher' with 'www' (i.e. www.ed.gov) and get the Web client instead.
